Victoria Nuland: America’s tumultuous diplomat

Last week, the most popular and very influential German weekly news magazine, Der Spiegel, published an article about US Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland in relation to Ukraine.  Der Spiegel is considered “left” and is comparable to Time magazine in the US.  Below is a translation of that article into English.

NovoRussia’s Battle for Independence: New Statement From Igor Strelkov, June 8 (Deutsche Übersetzung)

As the war in NovoRussia rages on, the extreme bias of the Western mainstream media is astounding. While they do not even report on the large ongoing military assault on a mid-sized (population 115,000) “European” city, they certainly will not give you the perspective of the combatants fighting against “their side”.

Igor Strelkov is the nom de guerre of the Minister of Defence (Novorossiya) and Commander of the Slavyansk Garrison. His statement of today is available in the original Russian, in an English translation by Gleb Bazov (@gbazov), and, now, in German translation as well.

Ukraine Crisis: Is Right Sector Implementing EuroMaidan PR’s Terrorist Agenda?

On April 13, EuroMaidan PR – “Site of the Official Public Relations Secretariat for the Headquarters of the National Resistance in Kyiv, Ukraine” – published a terrorist manifesto urging the Kiev junta to “fight back” against a purported Russian invasion using unconventional means.  The manifesto warned that if its recommended actions were not taken immediately, “by the end of [April 2014], Ukraine will be destroyed as a nation and suffer brutal Russian occupation”.

Obviously the paranoid delusions of the EuroMaidan PR team have little relation to reality, but what is relevant from the manifesto is the six specific proposals made for fighting against Russia:

  • Destroy all gas pipelines & bomb the Belarusian gas pipeline, thus launching the boycott of Russian energy that the West has refused to undertake until now.
  • “Flood Ukraine with small arms by arming every patriotic citizen to unleash a massive guerrilla war when Russian forces invade.
  • “Provide guerrillas with Anti-tank Guided Missiles, Man Portable Air-defense Missiles, mines, explosives and everything else in Ukraine’s arsenal to ensure the guerrillas can resist effectively for years.
  • “Call on Ukrainians in the West to attack and kill members of the Putin regime, their associates and close relatives.
  • Remove uranium from Ukraine’s nuclear reactors and prepare to disperse it in Russia by all means possible — the Budapest Memorandum depriving Ukraine of nuclear power status is clearly moot now.
  • “Prepare to shell Belgorod with whatever missiles and artillery Ukraine has in its arsenal to flatten that city.”

Recent days have seen what appear to be concrete steps taken to implement the two highlighted elements of this terrorist agenda.

Attempted Nuclear Power Plant Assault

On May 15, 2014, in Energodar, Ukraine, police captured twenty militants of the Right Sector who had tried to seize the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, Ukraine’s largest.

The militants were armed with machine guns and covered their faces (video).  When confronted by police, they claimed to be acting on a possible threat to “separatists” on the power plant.

However, no indication exists that these Right Sector militants tried to warn federal, regional, city or power plant security personnel about this alleged threat.  What was their real intent?

Gas Pipeline Tampering and Explosions

On the same day, three explosions ripped through the Urengoy–Pomary–Uzhgorod international high pressure gas pipeline in Nebyliv village, Ivano-Frankivsk region.  Evidence of explosives was found and the explosions are being investigated as a “terrorist attack”. The regional governor has also indicated that the blasts were most likely due to bombings.  The bombings follow several unsuccessful attempts in prior days to damage the pipeline.

It should be noted that the Ivano-Frankisvk region is in Wester Ukraine and stands as one of the epicenters of Ukrainian ultra-nationalism and Right Sector support.  It should also be noted that Dmitry Yarosh, leader of the Right Sector (which is closely aligned with Euromaidan PR), has also threatened to blow up Russian gas pipelines.

BBC News Propaganda: The Art of Presenting Black as White

On May 9, 2014, BBC published a news segment on its website entitled “Ukraine: ‘Blood bath’ in Mariupol“, which purported to inform its viewers about the day’s events in Mariupol, Ukraine.  On that day, at least seven people were killed and 39 injured when Ukraine’s haphazard paramilitary “National Guard” attacked, first, an interior ministry building occupied by police who had refused Kiev’s orders to block local protesters from entering the city council building and, later, protesters in Mariupol, Ukraine.

Fraud (and much “Western” media propaganda is simply fraud) comes in two major flavors:  fraud by commission, and fraud by omission (the favored method for “Western” mass media, as it provides ample room for plausible deniability of ill intent).  In fraud by commission, a statement known to be false is made.  In fraud by omission, a true statement is made about an event, but the statement knowingly omits crucial context which, if known along with the given statement, would materially change a reasonable person’s understanding of that statement.

In this short news segment, BBC committed fraud by omission.

The relevant portion of the BBC news segment, which can also be viewed on YouTube, has the following narrative:

Video which the BBC believes shows the Ukrainian troops fighting a pitched battle with pro-Russian separatists in the center of Mariupol.

Accompanying footage shows Ukraine National Guard troops attacking a police station, followed by a clip of an activist shooting at some troops as they moved through the city.

Unfortunately for the sake of truth, the scene of the activist shooting at National Guard troops was meant to leave the viewer with the impression that “pro-Russian separatists” were firing at legitimate government troops in a “pitched battle”.

However, this impression is almost the opposite of the reality.  Fortunately in this case, at least three different long videos have surfaced that reveal what truly happened that day.  Indeed, one of them is the very video from which the BBC extracted its short clip.

To demonstrate the BBC’s blatant propaganda and deception, the accompanying video compares the BBC clip to these three much longer video clips (including the source video from which the BBC excerpted its clip).  These three videos show, from different perspectives, the events in the seconds before and after the “BBC shooter” clip:

  • A solider shot and wounded two men about 20 yards from the nearest troops. One was on his knees with hands in the air, holding up his ID; the other, next to him, was dressed in a suit and was also holding up his ID.
  • The same soldier shot and severely wounded a photojournalist on assignment to RT, a leading Russian international news network,
  • Moments later a soldier shot a man standing calmly in a crosswalk on the street, at least 40 yards from the nearest soldier.
  • The crowd became very angry, and one amongst them pulled out his firearm and shot at the soldier responsible for shooting (at least) the first three men.  This is the only part of the clip used by the BBC.
  • Moments later a soldier shot a young man who in anger attempted to toss a small chair at the retreating soldiers (though they were clearly in no danger).
  • Moments later a bystander is killed by a soldier when he is shot in the back of his head.

What is particularly appalling about the BBC’s “selective excerpt” is that moments before the clip shown by the BBC, the video from which the BBC cut its excerpt shows these National Guard troops shooting an unarmed photojournalist working for an international news network, which shooting did not even merit comment by the BBC.

Recall, when watching the video below, that the BBC claimed it showed a “pitched battle” between Ukrainian troops and “pro-Russian separatists” (how could the BBC possibly know the political views of the lone shooter, as many citizens in Mariupol favor a federalized Ukraine over Russian annexation, and others simply do not approve of military forces storming their city – indeed he may have been an off-duty policeman who had been under fire from the troops earlier in the day at the Interior Ministry Building) is a third form of propaganda:  presenting rumors, opinion and speculation as facts.

Odessa Massacre: Video Narrative of Provocation and Execution

I have been working on several posts regarding the Odessa Massacre that happened at the Odessa Trades Union House on May 2, 2014, and have been watching a lot of video about those tragic events (or wonderful events, for many in Ukraine and elsewhere).  Today I stumbled across a new video which provides the best documentary narrative I have seen of the tragic events of that fateful day.

Western Media Bias: Fascists in Ukraine

The “Western” main stream media has faced what for them is a horrifying development in the Ukraine crisis: the ability of the “other side”/”enemy” to return fight in the propaganda/information war.  This has caused major distress in various elite circles, as the constant barrage of monopolistic misinformation and propaganda to which the populations of the West have been subjected for decades is coming under attack.

Western Media Bias: The Donetsk Protester Clashes (April 28, 2014)

Today in Donetsk, about 1-2,000 anti-federalists held a rally with the slogan “Donetsk is Ukraine. March for Unity“.  Along the route toward Donetsk center, the protesters were met by a group of hundreds of pro-federalist activists, and a violent confrontation erupted.

Western media, almost uniformly, placed the entire blame for the confrontation on the pro-federalists, or buried the contributions of the anti-federalists deep in the story:
